I'm Lettin' You In On The Ground Floor

Actually, consider it a second chance.

In yesterday's paper, there is a review of the Austin City Limits Music Festival that occurred over the weekend. I was primarily interested to see what their review of Rilo Kiley would say.

For those who are familiar with earlier entries of this record, I wrote a little bit about them on July 13th. I found them by accident late last year, fell in love with their music, and have been telling everybody I meet about them as often as I can. Primarily, it's because I am never the cool kid that knows about something first. I'm always the last to know about the hottest thing - just about the time that it's not cool anymore.

So, in a couple of years when everybody is talking about his great band, you can nonchalantly mention you've been listening to them since way back when. I'm just sayin'.

I'm telling you, Rilo Kiley is on a path headed straight for stardom. In a selfish way, I hope that they never arrive. I love the acuity of their music and fear that the sophistication of a major label will smooth their jagged corners. Or that the smell of hard cash will temper their broken hearts and unrequited love. Basically, I fear that I'll soon hear some of their music played on a commercial for one-hour eyeglasses or jeans dancing around by themselves.

They've passed through Dallas in the past couple of months and I've missed both performances. The first was because they were playing on a Sunday night. I couldn't find a partner in crime to go with me, so I said I'd catch them next time. Then, last Friday, Coldplay was their closing band (how do you like that spin?). I don't care for Coldplay's music and didn't want to burn the money just to see Rilo Kiley. So, I'll catch them the next time around.

Well, a co-worker of Melissa's went to the concert and said R.K. wasn't too great but Coldplay was excellent. Just the fact that few people like them now makes me like them all that much more. Later, a separate co-worker of Melissa's chimed in that she has borrowed a R.K. cd from a friend and enjoys it. I always did like her. Now, she's that much cooler.

So tonight, I burned her the previous two cd's before their more mainsteam album hit last summer. I got a little too adventurous with the project because I made a color photocopy of the two albums, their respective play lists, and cut them out so they would neatly fit in the cd cover. I'm starting to like this burning of cd's. See, told you I'm way behind the curve.

Anyway, see for yourself and set your DVR or Tivo or whatever you have for Austin City Limits on Sunday, October 8th. Rilo Kiley and Jack Johnson will be featured.

See you in the funny papers.
