It's Early

More journaling which means Jack Handy and I are miles apart - no Deep Thoughts today.

I've been in a Christmas mood today, which is quite early for me. I usually don't start thinking Christmas until the end of the first week of December. It's too long a holiday to sustain feeling Christmasy all the time - especially when the weather is anything but.

We put our Christmas tree up today. Usually, it doesn't go up for another week or so. Today has been a lazy day around the house so it was easy to find the time.

I woke up at 6:45 this morning - just in time to watch Meet Me in St. Louis. I'm not a big Judy Garland fan but she's really good in this movie. Plus, she debuted the song "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".

Were it not for Ms. Garland, the lyrics we sing today would be quite different; originally, the song told us to "Have yourself a merry little Christmas/ It may be your last." And instead of "hang[ing] a shining star upon the highest bough", we'd all have to figure how to "muddle through somehow." We should all thank Judy for demanding new lyrics.

Putting up the Christmas tree is always a chore. Due to Melissa's killer allergies, ours is always a fake tree. It's several years old and annually loses a peg or two that keeps the branches attached. It leans a little bit so once it's up, it can't be touched lest it start to sway.

I've learned over the years that putting up the tree should be fun instead of frustrating. So, I don't harbor any thoughts about putting up a decoration without explicit instructions. However, I'm in charge of playing the music. And if you couldn't guess already, most of it is Sinatra, Crosby, and Cole. With some jazz mixed in there. Plus, we bought a cd at Starbuck's yesterday that has some good songs by Norah Jones, Diana Krall, and Mahahlia Jackson, among others.

That's the big news for today. The rest of the evening will be lazy as well. The Big Sleep in on now. I'll start thinking dinner after it's over.

That's as deep as it gets today.
