1973

I stole an exercise I found on another blog today. This particular person found a website that lists the top 100 songs (unsure of criteria, though) for each year. This person got the songs from the year she was born and just wrote whether she liked them or not. I noticed when I starting writing, that most songs are attached somehow to a particular memory or movie. So, here's to sharing. I tried to leave a comment next to the songs I could sing in my head.

1. Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Ole Oak Tree, Tony Orlando and Dawn - I actually thought this song was much older, perhaps dating back to Korean or WW II. Although this song deals with a convict coming home unsure if he is still wanted at home.
2. Bad Bad Leroy Brown, Jim Croce - fun to sing, but the only part anybody knows – the chorus. Also a cool song when you were a kid because it had a dirty word in it, but it wasn’t technically cussing since you were only singing a song.
3. Killing Me Softly With His Song, Roberta Flack - didn’t care much for this song and care for it even less since About A Boy came out. Haven't Hugh Grant films been declared illegal yet?
4. Let's Get It On, Marvin Gaye – not a bad song, but not all that great. And even though it wasn't because of this song, nobody deserves to get shot by his dad.
5. My Love, Paul McCartney and Wings
6. Why Me, Kris Kristofferson
7. Crocodile Rock, Elton John – one of my least favorite Elton John songs. More comment than this song deserves.
8. Will It Go Round In Circles, Billy Preston
9. You're So Vain, Carly Simon – you only use this song against people you don’t like
10. Touch Me In The Morning, Diana Ross
11. The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia, Vicki Lawrence – great tunage but not familiar with this particular version
12. Playground In My Mind, Clint Holmes
13. Brother Louie, Stories
14. Delta Dawn, Helen Reddy - familiar but still a little foggy
15. Me And Mrs. Jones, Billy Paul - hate it
16. Frankenstein, Edgar Winter Group
17. Drift Away, Dobie Gray
18. Little Willy, Sweet
19. You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, Stevie Wonder - Actually, this is Melissa's favorite song. When she was a baby, her mom would hold her and sing this song to her.
20. Half Breed, Cher – Not a big fan of Cher, but since my mother is Hispanic and my father is Anglo, I dig it a little more.
21. That Lady, Isley Bros.
22. Pillow Talk, Sylvia
23. We're An American Band, Grand Funk Railroad - I know exactly eight words from this song (and three are repeats) - "We are an American Band, an American Band."
24. Right Place, Wrong Time, Dr. John
25. Wildflower, Skylark
26. Superstition, Stevie Wonder - dude is just awesome.
27. Loves Me Like A Rock, Paul Simon - Like everything Simon did, a really good song.
28. The Morning After, Maureen McGovern
29. Rocky Mountain High, John Denver - If you haven't watch Final Destination, do so soon. You'll never sing this song in an airport again. But since my sense of humor is rather sick, I will.
30. Stuck In The Middle With You, Stealers Wheel - I can’t sing this song without wanting to cut somebody’s ear off and douse them in gasoline. Is it just me?
31. Shambala, Three Dog Night
32. Love Train, O'Jays
33. I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Barry White - sorry, Barry White's voice is not sexy. And that little half-pint from Allie McBeal who uses his songs as this theme song is not funny.
34. Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose, Tony Orlando and Dawn
35. Keep On Truckin' (Pt. 1), Eddie Kendricks - Oh, I like Part Two so much better.
36. Dancing In The Moonlight, King Harvest
37. Danny's Song, Anne Murray
38. Monster Mash, Bobby "Boris" Pickett and The Crypt Kickers – I have a very vivid memory of Halloween when I was in kindergarten. The teacher had this album and we had a hoola-hoop contest to this song. It was a graveyard smash.
39. Natural High, Bloodstone
40. Diamond Girl, Seals and Crofts
41. Long Train Running, Doobie Brothers
42. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth), George Harrison
43. If You Want Me To Stay, Sly and The Family Stone

45. Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye), Gladys Knight and The Pips
46. I'm Doing Fine Now, New York City
47. Could It Be I'm Falling In Love, Spinners - not bad, not good.
48. Daniel, Elton John – I was friends in college with a guy named Daniel. We’d sing this song every time we saw him
49. Midnight Train To Georgia, Gladys Knight and The Pips - nobody sings this song like Gracie Adler.
50. Smoke On The Water , Deep Purple - Decent band, not a great song.
51. The Cover Of Rolling Stone, Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show
52. Behind Closed Doors, Charlie Rich

54. Feelin' Stronger Every Day, Chicago
55. The Cisco Kid, War
56. Live And Let Die, Wings – Good James Bond song.
57. Oh, Babe, What Would You Say?, Hurricane Smith
58. I Believe In You, Johnnie Taylor
59. Sing, Carpenters – My sixth grade teacher loved, no, LOVED, the Carpenters. She’s always play their tapes during study hall. At the end of the school year, we had a mandatory talent show. As my friends and I had no talent (that we could share in public anyway), we got her tape and did a break-dance routine to the Carpenters.
60. Ain't No Woman (Like The One I Got), Four Tops – Don’t care for it. You only sing it to your lady when you’re in trouble.
61. Dueling Banjos, Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandel - good Buck Owens song, not familiar with this version
62. Higher Ground, Stevie Wonder
63. Here I Am (Come And Take Me), Al Green
64. My Maria, B.W. Stevenson
65. Superfly, Curtis Mayfield
66. Get Down, Gilbert O'Sullivan
67. Last Song, Edward Bear
68. Reelin' In The Years, Steely Dan – Great song, made even better by For Love of The Game when Costner meets Travolta's beard.
69. Hocus Pocus, Focus
70. Yesterday Once More, Carpenters
71. Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Bette Midler - I actually like it. But not as good as The Andrews Sisters.
72. Clair, Gilbert O'Sullivan
73. Do It Again, Steely Dan
74. Kodachrome, Paul Simon - See #27.
75. Why Can't We Live Together, Timmy Thomas
76. So Very Hard To Go, Tower Of Power
77. Do You Want To Dance?, Bette Midler - This is perhaps one of the sweetest songs I know. I love it.
78. Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu, Johnny Rivers
79. Ramblin' Man, Allman Brothers - decent, but forgettable song.
80. Masterpiece, Temptations
81. Peaceful, Helen Reddy
82. One Of A Kind (Love Affair), Spinners
83. Funny Face, Donna Fargo
84. Funky Worm, Ohio Players
85. Angie, Rolling Stones

89. Daisy A Day, Jud Strunk

96. Free Ride, Edgar Winter Group
97. Space Oddity, David Bowie
98. It Never Rains In Southern California, Albert Hammond
99. The Twelfth Of Never, Donny Osmond - I hear this song on KAAM quite often. I enjoy it.
100. Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Temptations - not a bad song, but not good either.
