I find the relationships that my wife maintains with her high school and college friends to be very interesting. First is the fact that she maintains them; most of my friendships from high school remained there.
And because Melissa has remained friends with so many from her teenage years, we've been going to weddings for the past half-dozen years.
We found ourselves in Waco over the weekend attending yet another ceremony/reception. Depending on the time of year, I usually look forward to spending time with this group of people who, over time, have become my friends as well.
As you can well imagine, this gathering soon segregates on the basis of gender. Melissa and her girlfriends are a tight clique; on the other hand, the Spouses' Club is relatively open-membership. We even offer junior memberships for those who are just dating.
Because the Spouses' Club only meets once or twice a year, topics of conversation remain more or less the same. We don't talk money, cars, religion, work, or politics. We talk about sports.
Anyway, at the reception, stories about previous weddings and other get-togethers soon became the topic of conversation so I thought I'd share my favorite wedding story.
A friend of Melissa's got married on December 1, 2001.
She's an Aggie and obviously wasn't too concerned about creating a scheduling conflict between her own wedding ceremony and the Big 12 Championship. I was. And as it turned out, I wasn't the only one.
The groom was in the Corp of Cadets, as were most of the groomsmen. For different reasons, they were just as interested in seeing the game as I was. I was hoping for a Texas win; they were hoping for a Buffalo rout - which they got.
As word quickly spread that Simms was throwing interceptions and fumbling the ball left and right, most of the male contingent moved from the reception hall to the bar. By the end of the night, the wedding party was happy; the Spouses' Club was not.
I prefer summer weddings.
